Student and temporary visas

Visitor and Work and Holiday visas (600, 462)

A Visitor (600) visa is usually granted for 3 months, allows no work, and in the Sponsored Family stream always carries condition 8503, No Further Stay. Parents of Australian citizens and permanent residents may be granted a visa valid for more than 12 months, but may not stay more than 12 months in any 18 month period. A no further stay condition can be waived only for a change that happened after grant and was outside the holder's control; marriage to an Australian, failing a course and pregnancy are not grounds, and the Tribunal cannot review a refusal to waive.

  3. 03We lodge in time, keep you informed, and tell you in writing what the conditions of the new visa require of you.

Common questions

My parents' visitor visa has a no further stay condition. Can they apply for a partner or parent visa onshore?

Not unless the condition is waived first, and a waiver requires a change after the visa was granted that was outside their control. In most cases the application has to be made from outside Australia.
